Caterpillar in the street

Biology | May 11th, 2011 | RSS Feed

This caterpillar was risking her life on a roller skating lane in Germany. She was actually 10 cm long and looked as if she had eaten half a tree to breakfast. And maybe that was true, because the caterpillar of the goat moth lives inside tree trunks and it takes several years until it comes out to go through the last step of the metamorphosis into a butterfly. In Sweden they are sometimes called tree killers (träddödare).

Latin: Cossus cossus
Swedish: Allmän träfjäril
English: G0at moth
